Incentive Form (PDF Download)
Montana-Dakota offers two residential natural gas conservation programs in the state of Montana. Financial incentives are available to encourage residential consumers to initiate natural gas conservation measures in their homes and are available to Montana-Dakota’s residential natural gas customers in the state of Montana. The following outlines the details of the programs.
ENERGY STAR® rated Natural Gas Furnaces: Montana-Dakota residential natural gas customers who replace an 80% or less annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) natural gas furnace with an ENERGY STAR rated natural gas furnace (90% or greater AFUE) qualify for an incentive payment of $150.
ENERGY STAR® rated Programmable Thermostats: Montana-Dakota residential natural gas customers who purchase and install an ENERGY STAR rated programmable thermostat qualify for an incentive payment of $20.
A typical customer will save 1% of their heating energy use for every degree of set back (with an eight hour minimum setback period). For example: an average customer who sets back their thermostat 5 degrees and uses 83 dk of natural gas for heating per year will save approximately 4 dk per year for the 15 year life of the thermostat. Actual energy savings may be higher or lower depending on the degree of setback temperature the customer desires.
Montana State Income Tax Credit: In addition to the incentive paid by Montana-Dakota, Montana homeowners are also eligible for a tax credit to cover a portion of the cost to purchase and install high efficiency heating systems and programmable thermostats that are ENERGY STAR® rated. The credit is 25% of the investment made to improve the energy efficiency of their home, up to a maximum of $500 per year. To apply for the tax credit, the customer must complete and include tax form “ENRG-C” when filing their State Income taxes. The energy conservation credit is allowed only for the year the energy conservation improvements are made. Tax forms are available at www.energizemontana.com or by contacting the Montana Department of Revenue at 406-444-6900.
Although ENERGY STAR rated equipment can be more expensive to purchase up front, the cost difference will be paid back over time through lower energy bills.
Program Terms and Conditions:
Qualifications: The qualifying equipment must be installed in a Montana residence served with Natural Gas from Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. (Montana-Dakota). The residence must be served under Montana-Dakota’s Residential service rate 60. Montana-Dakota uses ENERGY STAR® listings to determine eligibility of the equipment. You can access this information at www.energystar.gov. Dealers are not eligible to receive their customer’s incentive. Equipment installed under warranty replacement does not qualify for the incentive payment.
- ENERGY STAR rated Furnaces: Incentive applies to the replacement of an existing efficiency (80% AFUE rating or less) furnace with an ENERGY STAR® rated (90% AFUE rating or greater) furnace.
- ENERGY STAR rated Programmable Thermostat: Incentive applies to the purchase and installation of an ENERGY STAR® rated programmable thermostat and is limited to one unit per residential natural gas account.
Application Requirements: The incentive application must be completely filled out with the purchaser information, equipment information (including a sales invoice/receipt with the brand, model number, serial number and installation date) and dealer information. Montana-Dakota is unable to accept applications that do not include all of this information. It is the responsibility of the dealer and purchaser to ensure that the installed equipment qualifies for the incentive. If it does not qualify, no incentive will be paid.
Incentive Payment Details: Montana-Dakota issues incentive payments in the form of checks, not utility bill credits.
