Supporting Renewable Energy in Wyoming

Wyoming electric customers have the opportunity to support renewable energy efforts through the Renewable Energy Rider program.  This voluntary program allows customers to purchase blocks of energy associated with Renewable Energy Credits.  Renewable Energy Credits are awarded when electricity is generated through renewable sources such as wind, solar or biomass.  Through this program, Montana-Dakota will purchase credits associated with wind energy and Wyoming customers can in turn enroll to support the purchase of renewable energy credits through an additional charge on their electric utility bill.

What are the benefits of purchasing renewable energy credits?

Many people today are interested in what they can do to reduce their carbon footprint.  Supporting renewable energy is a popular solution for reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.  Currently Montana-Dakota does not have any renewable resources in the electric generation mix that serves customers in Wyoming.  This program allows customers to purchase renewable energy credits in blocks of 100 kWh allowing customers to support renewable generation projects.

Who is eligible to purchase renewable energy credits?

This program is available to all Wyoming customers (residential and commercial) served with electricity from Montana-Dakota.

How does the program work?

Montana-Dakota is offering customers the ability to purchase blocks of 100 kWh of renewable energy credits at a cost of $0.62* per block. The average residential customer uses approximately 900 kWh per month, so a customer wanting to support 100 percent of their usage with renewable energy would need to purchase nine blocks per month adding approximately $5.58 to their bill per month. However, customers may purchase as many or as few blocks as they would like.

The renewable energy blocks you purchase will be billed as a line item on your Montana-Dakota bill. Customers who choose to participate in this program will be committing for one full year and will continue on a month-to-month basis after the initial one-year term.

One Renewable Energy Credit equals 1,000 kWh. Each block sold in this program represents one-tenth of a Renewable Energy Credit.
